Knowledge Clip: Life Cycle Assessment
This knowledge clip explains the concept of food life cycle assessment, or short, LCA. Every product and service, including food, has an impact on the world around us. With a life cycle assessment, we measure this environmental impact. In this knowledge clip we will walk you through the fundamentals of an LCA, explain what it’s useful for, and show what the process of conducting an LCA looks like in practice.
Knowledge Clip: Food System Environmental Impact Categories
When talking about the environmental sustainability of the food system, what are we talking about? This knowledge clip describes several important environmental impacts that are relevant when talking about the environmental sustainability of the food system.
A sustainable diet is, by definition, nutritionally adequate, economically affordable, culturally acceptable, and environmentally respectful. Such dimensions may not be entirely compatible with each other, which makes designing a sustainable diet a challenge. This knowledge clip introduces mathematical optimization, a method that allows us to simultaneously combine several metrics to design sustainable diets. It also shows you Optimeal, which is a tool that allows us to carry out diet optimization.
Future-proof and sustainable healthy diets based on current eating patterns of adults in the Netherlands
Food systems have a significant impact on climate change. To keep global warming below 1.5 °C, as recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), eating patterns must change. However, future diets should also satisfy nutritional requirements and respect cultural acceptability and can therefore best be modeled on national level. Our colleagues Marcelo Tyszler, Roline Broekema and Hans Blonk investigated together with a group of researchers what a future-proof and sustainable healthy diet could look like for the Netherlands. There findings are published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. On 8 December 2020 Marcelo gave a presentation at the LEAP Conference 2020 to present this study.
Webinar Sustainable Diets
During the webinar you will learn more about what healthy and sustainable diets are. We will investigate the urgent nature of the global challenges facing us. You will learn how to calculate a healthy and sustainable dietary pattern and the type of data you need. How do you determine what is healthy? And what exactly is a sustainable diet? Drawing on inspiring examples we unpack and explore these complex issues.
How to determine the footprint of agri- and food products?
During this webinar we introduced how you can determine the footprint of agri- and food products. We gave a concise introduction to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. Furthermore, recent developments in the sustainability field such as the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) has been highlighted. The webinar contains practical case studies and examples to explain the concepts.
