Development of the Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI)

LCA Database Animal Feed Production

A harmonised calculation method is essential for determining the environmental impact of animal products such as meat, milk and eggs in a fair and correct manner. To this end the global feed organisations have launched a new initiative: the Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI). The aim is to create a free and transparent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) database. In order to comply with international methodological requirements, GFLI has entered into a partnership with FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations) and LEAP (Livestock Environmental Assessment Performance). The GFLI database should eventually become the main international source for LCI information on animal feed production and contribute to making the sector more sustainable.

Development of the database

The purpose of the database is to make LCA data available to LCA researchers, tool developers and business experts and increase transparency in the sector, which can ultimately lead to more sustainable agri-food chains. Blonk Consultants is closely involved in the development of the LCA database. The data is generated within the Agri-footprint framework and also makes use of background data from Agri-footprint. All the data will eventually also be available in the Agri-footprint database.

Initial results

One of the first results is the EC feed LCI dataset, which was developed as part of the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) project.
In addition, the results for Europe, Canada and the United States will soon be published in a central node.
