Advancing sustainability in the agri-food sector requires accurate and precise information. Blonk developed the Agri-footprint database to provide a thorough and consistent life cycle inventory (LCI) database for the agriculture and food sector. The database is widely used and implemented by the food industry, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) community, the scientific community, and governments worldwide.

Agri-footprint covers data on feed, food, and biomass as agricultural products. The database facilitates transparency and a more rapid transformation to sustainable food supply chains in multiple ways.

About the database

Since its release in 2014, various organizations have used Agri-footprint for many applications, from labeling schemes to LCA studies to product design tools. The database contains approximately 4,000 products and processes. Over the last years, Agri-footprint has been critically reviewed and widely accepted by the food industry, the LCA community, the scientific community, and governments worldwide.

Agri-footprint is widely used to conduct carbon footprints, full LCAs, and hot-spot analyses. Many processes are modeled in alignment with the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) of the European Commission.

We aim to update the database yearly, based on newly available data from databases, scientific publications, and the industry.

The consistent LCI database

After publishing the first version of Agri-footprint in 2014, the database has been developed further over the past years, continuously improving the data quality and increasing the coverage of products and processes. Agri-footprint builds upon statistics, scientific literature, and our Blonk expert modeling. As such, it is a high-quality, reliable, and consistent database for scientists, consultants, product managers, or any other professionals.

The database is developed to work well with the ReCiPe LCA method, available in openLCA and SimaPro. Three allocation options can be applied: mass, energy, and economic allocation.

Agri-footprint Branded Data Add-ons

Agri-footprint branded data are brand-specific add-ons to the Agri-footprint database. While Agri-footprint also contains a wide range of general data on agricultural commodities, branded data is company or brand-specific life cycle impact data. This branded data, disclosed by companies themselves and calculated based on primary data, helps companies make their products' environmental performance visible and share it with stakeholders.

SimaPro

SimaPro is a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software package developed by PRé Sustainability. A license is needed to use SimaPro, coming with various databases, such as Agri-footprint.

In other words: Agri-footprint is available for free in the latest SimaPro version. 

openLCA

openLCA is freely available open-source software for LCAs and related life cycle analyses. GreenDelta initiated the development of this software.

Agri-footprint is available in openLCA as a paid database. Find more information on how to purchase Agri-footprint in the openLCA Nexus online LCA data repository.

> Agri-footprint in Excel

The calculated environmental impacts of all products and processes in Agri-footprint are also directly accessible in Excel format. They are calculated using the ReCiPe 2016 midpoint (H) method and include all process descriptions.

The use case is flexible, and multiple licensing options are available:

Excel - Academic & Limited Commercial Use

Available in the following versions:

  • Economic, mass and energy allocation: €800 (ex VAT)
  • Economic allocation only: €700 (ex VAT)

This license is for 1 user and can be used for academic purposes and 3 commercial projects.

Excel - Commercial License

Available in the following versions:

  • 3 allocation options: Economic, Mass and Energy allocation 
  • 1 allocation option: Economic allocation only

All employees can use this license within a company. It lets you use the database for commercial purposes, including integrating the data into an internal tool to generate client reports. You can't share the data with people outside your organization.

Agri-footprint methodology documents and product coverage

Methodology documents

The methodology report of Agri-footprint contains background information on the methodology, calculation rules, and the data used to develop the data published in Agri-footprint.

The background report includes two documents:

  • Part 1 describes the overall methodology and fundamental principles like allocation, system boundaries, reviews, and limitations of Agri-footprint 5.0;
  • Part 2 describes the data used to model the processes of Agri-footprint 5.0.

Methodology reports of previous versions of Agri-footprint are available upon request. 

Products in Agri-footprint

Agri-footprint contains inventories of food, feed, and beverage-related ingredients.

The LCA database contains almost 4,000 products and processes, most of which are country-specific. Some examples:

  • Fertilizer industry: calcium ammonium nitrate, urea, diammonium phosphate, NPK fertilizers
  • Vegetable oil and protein meal industry: soybean oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, palm oil
  • Sugar industry: beet sugar, cane sugar
  • Starch industry: maize starch, flour, potato starch, tapioca
  • Dairy industry: milk, cream, milk powder
  • Meat industry: beef, veal, broilers, pork

LUC Impact

Deforestation is one of the major issues facing the global agriculture production system, with as much as 8% of global CO2 emissions attributable to land-use change. A well-known example is deforestation to cultivate crops such as soybean and oil palm.

A big challenge for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) researchers is translating this impact of land-use change to specific crops from specific countries while little primary data is available. We specifically designed our LUC Impact Tool to address this challenge.

LUC Impact is an Excel-based tool that provides a predefined way of calculating GHG emissions from LUC. The LUC Impact tool can define LUC when the previous land use is known or unknown.
